Back pain is one of the leading medical complaints in our society, many times caused by sport injuries and improper techniques. Back surgeries continue to be one of the most commonly performed unnecessary surgeries (MacCall, 2007). With this in mind, this seven week series will be dedicated to linking pain to our posture, muscle tightness and weakness, as well as developing body awareness. This series will be dedicated to developing healthy curves in the spine, abdominal strength, developing flexibility with in the hips, and strengthening the large muscles running along the spine. In this class, students will learn which muscles need strengthening and which need stretching rather than focusing only on the idea of strengthening our abdomens.
